Well this interview was one of the most interesting interviews of this year. There were a lot of new facts about Dan, and Dan is revealing more and more about himself the older he gets.
Haha, I think it's great that Dan wants to get a tatoo! It's yet another way of expressing yourself and it's not going to be huge or all over his body.
About the religion comment. It really doesn't affect the way I see Dan at all. He's a good person from what we all see. He's a delightful young man, and VERY respectful! It's his decision to believe in whatever he wants.
The pictures are amazing and very cool!
Thanks a bunch for posting!
Terri   |173.171.184.227 |2009-07-04 23:24:17
Hey everyone. I just read part of that article and i find a bunch of inconsisties. Dan is not an atheist. And he DID NOT have a portrait of him hanging in that gallery when he was 16. My friends and I met him the day after a premiere when he was 16 and he and family were off to Astrailia to do December Boys. Don't believe everything you read.
danilo   |Registered |2009-07-04 23:41:22
Sorry, but the National Portrait Gallery itself seems to be under the illusion that the story is true:

http://www.npg.org.uk/about/press/daniel-radcliffe.php

And funny you should specify he was just leaving for Australia to film December Boys, because it was then in Australia that he first revealed in an interview: 'I'm not a religious person in the slightest'. Video of Dan saying exactly that was on this site at the time.
danilo   |Registered |2009-07-04 18:46:12
Possibly the only controversial thing Dan said with regard to religion is that he implied religious Americans take offense quickly and easily. ('There we go Dan, that's half of America that's not going to see the next Harry Potter film on the back of that comment.') Those of you fussing surely see the irony that you're proving he wasn't being offensive at all, but just being factual and correct.
snowdog   |89.229.219.99 |2009-07-05 06:13:45
Well, I'm not American but I don't understand why would I refuse to see the movie. He has the right to be atheist and his views shouldn't influence our decision. It's perfectly simple.
saky   |129.44.25.122 |2009-07-04 15:59:52
Not getting The British Sea Power thing though. How could one not like Michael Jackson because he's poppish and at the same time like a band that sounds like a bad 80's dance band -- with negative funk.
Holly R   |71.93.145.164 |2009-07-04 22:40:09
He's one of those people who everyone expects everyone else to like. Same with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. I don't like any of them or understand why they are so brilliant. I'm happy Dan doesn't like Micheal. And it is sad he died but we don't need to all of a sudden love his music.

Anyway....

saky   |129.44.25.122 |2009-07-04 11:40:32
THANKS Emma and Dr.com! Awesome job on the scanning, very readable.

"Catepillar eyebrows".

Good news! I've been begging hm to get a tatto for over a year.
danilo   |Registered |2009-07-04 18:36:01
I roll my eyes at tattoos. When most everyone has got one then surely it's a failure as an expression of individuality.
saky   |129.44.25.122 |2009-07-04 21:51:43
So danillo, I take it you are sans tattoo?

Yes tattooing does scream lack-of-individuality these days doesn't it?!

However, I think certain common phenomena exist beyond Zeitgeist. I mean, once in awhile, you find people with magnificent stories about their tattoo experiences.
danilo   |Registered |2009-07-04 22:54:18
No tattoo, no piercing.

-.-

Anyone with a magnificent story about his/her tattoo experience would be noteworthy for being a good storyteller, not because submitting to inked needles imbued him/her with character.
saky   |129.44.25.122 |2009-07-04 23:35:35
True. Seems as if many a person subjects themself to the experience for the benefit of living to tell the story.

However, it can be a very personal experience. And it can be a real buzz. If administered correctly, the experience brings you from pain to ecstatic pleasure. If the first experience goes fair to midlin' or very well, it can become an addictive pleasure.

Maybe our Baby shouldn't get the first one!
saky   |129.44.25.122 |2009-07-04 23:43:26
Come on, danilo, don't ypu just love it when someone you've know for a long time rolls up his/her sleeves to expose a tatto you never thought they'd own?

I think Dan should have his British Sea Power quote tattooed on the small of his back.
danilo   |Registered |2009-07-04 23:55:10
'Come on, danilo, don't ypu just love it when someone you've know for a long time rolls up his/her sleeves to expose a tatto you never thought they'd own?'

For me that would be a 'You damn kids! Get off my lawn!!' moment.

Does it have to be British Sea Power? I don't find them all that profound. Maybe it's worth a laugh when some dullard mistakes it for a reference to The Bravery, but I don't see how that would be worth getting a tattoo.
sakyabuni   |208.125.255.186 |2009-07-06 07:54:34
"Does it have to be British Sea Power? I don't find them all that profound. Maybe it's worth a laugh when some dullard mistakes it for a reference to The Bravery, but I don't see how that would be worth getting a tattoo."

Seems we've found some common ground here, danilo.

Ah well, and it pains me to say this but it's his body not mine!
danilo   |Registered |2009-07-05 21:03:11
Just to underline why tattoos are always a bad idea, no matter how momentarily cool one thinks it is... Exhibit A: a collection of moronic Twilight tattoos.

http://community.livejournal.com/ohnotheydidnt/36812123.html

Why even risk the possibility of being in the same mindset?
archy   |122.162.212.94 |2009-07-04 05:20:22
that was hilarious...'I finished my parents off..' oh,I laughed sooo much at that.and Dan playing a father--did he mean the last scene of the last HP movie at first i couldn't think when harry fought nagini, but of course it has to be at godric's hollow.as for being beaten,it's probably when they were caught by the snatchers, although in the book hermione used a spell to disfigure harry's face.or maybe at the malfoy manor..
goodness me,his frankness is astonishing.but in a way it's good because then there won't be anything for the paparazzi to ferret for.to me it doesn't matter if he is an atheist--i believe in god but i'm not a great one for rituals and going to the temple regularly.it's a personal choice.
Lithia   |64.12.117.6 |2009-07-04 03:48:49
Great article, gorgeous pictures (and thanks to Emma for the scans of the issue). But, I have to say that Esquire 8 absolutely cracked me up, for quite a few minutes!
Julie   |79.67.154.22 |2009-07-04 02:36:45
Very interesting, Dan never fails to impress in interviews.

Like some of those photos too.

Very true about the training part of acting (ie: ballet). He will have to work to get parts now that Potter is over and not a popular as before.

He's a really intelligent guy.

Nadine, who and where are you hehe?
Natalya  - wow! really a real person!   |210.24.91.108 |2009-07-04 01:54:47
I like it that this time, Daniel is really portrayed like a real, ordinary person (and not some overblowned celeb) who has his own ideas and opinions on the world today. When I looked through the article, I thought "Wow, he is really no better or worse than us, he is just like us." Though I have always seen him as an equal human and not some higher-up celeb snob.

I may be a Christian but I do not mind other religions, especially Atheism. In fact, I have a few atheist friends, and the one thing that connects us all is RESPECT. That is why I get really angry at other Christians who think themselves superior to everyone else...I maintain everyone is created equally.

And for Michael Jackson, I have similar views...I respect the man as an iconic humanitarian but his music does not click with me (unless the lyrics are meaningful). In fact, I called my friend, who was a huge fan, for consoling when I got the news.

And losing his viginity? Expectant. I am only a fan and I do not ...
Anonymous   |89.229.219.99 |2009-07-04 02:30:32
Because normal christians do not mind other religions. It's only few who do but they shout the loudest so you can hear only them.

And the Michael Jackson comment... I'm not surprised that he didn't want to go at all. He always said that he hate pop music, why would he want to go?
snowdog   |89.229.219.99 |2009-07-04 02:34:25
sorry, i forgot to write a name^

I laughed when I read about the milk But hey, at least he can cook. I'll better not say about my experience of trying to cook anything... I'm probably the worst cook in the world.
Holly R   |71.93.145.164 |2009-07-03 18:31:35
OMG what was not to like in this??!! 1st off, the pics were brillaint!!! So so diff and unique. A bruised and bloody Dan is major hot. YES! YES! YES! He's an atheist!!! So am I!!! It's one thing to say you aren't religious but another to say you are an atheist! BEST thing I will read all day LOL how does one leave cereal and milk out? Seems like a very male thing to do Omg! He's thinking of getting a tattoo! That will only bring his sexiness up if that's possible That is wicked cool. I swear, every interview mentions Dan drinking Diet Coke. That much Coke can't be good for your right? lol Um... what else? Who else really wants to know how horrible a child Dan was to make his parents not have any more? This was def the best interview this yr. So full of Dan's randomness and weirdness. What can top it? Well HBP is up soon so we'll soon see..!!
angela leighton  - not smiling in number 7   |65.185.71.127 |2009-07-03 17:55:03
I do not like number 7 Dan looks a little angry in that one
where is the sweet smile.
snowdog   |89.229.219.99 |2009-07-03 17:18:30
It's seems like I'm the only one who didn't like the religion comment.
newleaf31   |69.253.172.237 |2009-07-03 18:13:24
No, you're not. It's just that there's nothing one can do about it; he has to determine his own views. But I was also very disappointed. Agnosticism (the view he's espoused before now) and atheism are very different.
snowdog   |89.229.219.99 |2009-07-03 18:27:14
I'm not against him being atheist. I just don't want him to be one of those who make fun of religious people (I used to have rows with my friends because of that). I don't mind atheists as long as they don't treat religious people as total idiots who believe in rubbish. Daniel has never said anything against religious people (bless him for that) and I always respected him for that. I just hope he's not like my friend (who's awesome anyway, but that's the only thing that drives me mad about him).

Or maybe it's me who's prejudiced because of few friends of mine.
babs   |69.165.152.1 |2009-07-03 18:27:37
Dan's just an actor with his own ideas. I think he's talented, but I don't understand why anyone would be bothered by his views. At least they're not racist or homophobic views.
Anne   |85.49.194.84 |2009-07-03 21:06:44
Daniel has never made any comments against religious people, all the countrary, he has always said he is very interested in learning about all types of believes even if he doesn't agree with them. For example, he is proud of his Jewish background even if he doesn't practice the religion.

All of you are the ones who are being disrespectful to him and his believes, saying that you are "disappointed" with his comments about what he believes in.
So you feel disappointed every time someone doesn't share your believes? You are implying you think less of him because of that, which means you are the ones been disrespectful to him.

It's ironic how the people who always asks to be respected (usually religious people) are the ones who give less respect to people who don't agree with their points of view.
Star   |68.224.186.25 |2009-07-03 22:03:32
"You are implying you think less of him because of that..."

I for one implied nothing of the sort. I think even more highly of him because of how he states his views so simply and honestly and without mocking anyone else'. Please don't assume we ALL have the same feelings about this, okay?
snowdog   |89.229.219.99 |2009-07-04 02:26:05
How on earth did you manage to think that we don't respect him? If you read my next post you would know that i'm impressed how he doesn't say a word against religious people. I only said that my friends used to be mean to me because of my beliefs so i hope he's not like that. It really has nothing to do with disrespecting him

I, like many others, respect everyone, doesn't matter if they are religious or not.
And thank you for reminding me the Jewish comment. I forgot the one and it seems to dispell my worries.
saky   |129.44.25.122 |2009-07-04 18:33:15
He's young yet newleaf, he could change. Dramatically.
Star   |68.224.186.25 |2009-07-03 19:46:06
You're not the only one, Snowdog, but as newleaf just said, nothing we can do about it, he's formed his views the same as we all do. I agree with you, though, that I hope he never mocks people who do believe in Something or in a Supreme Being or whatever you want to call it. I don't think he will, though, I just can't imagine him doing something like that. I think he'd respect anyone's religious views even if they're not his own.
DieWithoutDan   |72.177.62.163 |2009-07-03 20:11:39
It's not just you, snowdog, I was very suprised and depressed at the comment.
snowdog   |89.229.219.99 |2009-07-03 20:24:53
Well, let's just hope he respects other people's belief
I remember i was impressed when he got asked about some christians' attitude towards Harry Potter - he didn't say a word against them (although in this case i wouldn't blame him if he did - it makes me furious when i hear "Harry Potter is about satanists..." etc).
So I just think I understood him wrong and he's not one of those who used to mock others. I'm just waiting for another new interview in which he would enlighten me
babs   |69.165.152.1 |2009-07-03 16:41:51
Fantastic interview and photos (love the ones on info page!).
maggie tucket   |69.149.213.143 |2009-07-03 15:47:33
Thanks so much for posting this, I read the entire article and can't stop looking at the photos...but now I must buy this magazine.
jain   |78.145.109.206 |2009-07-03 15:12:08
the picture at the back, where everyone are wearing glasses. Dan looks like Tom Cruise.
Celia  - Sexy!   |68.62.159.73 |2009-07-03 15:07:03
Dan is soo SEXY! I love this interview! It was not only funny, but very interesting. He's one of the most interesting people ever! I could just read about him non-stop. I can't believe he got into a fight with a 19-year old when he was only 14 and he was trying to protect someone else!! He's so awesome!!

I also love the part about all the HP cast members being horny. lol.

And the part with the snake...obviously he's filmed the GODRIC's HOLLOW scene! yay!
dawnkj63  - The best ever!   |Registered |2009-07-03 13:51:41
I really enjoyed this article! Dan at his best: funny, honest, self-deprecating, and GORGEOUS! Thanks to all those involved in bringing this to us.
Mg   |166.137.133.38 |2009-07-03 13:47:11
My god...these photos! The one with the bandaid... Beyond sexy !
oO_ola_Oo   |94.232.216.170 |2009-07-03 13:45:59
wow I've just read an article / interview ;D xD
it's really interesting as always for me xD
and I know now why Dan had punched photos ^^ xD

he don't like Michael Jackson's music ^^ xD
lol xD

hmm ballet interesting, interesting ;D xD
regina   |88.240.42.11 |2009-07-03 13:32:13
thank you emma.ballet!its great.i love musicals and operas.
i love punch pic.and he is very funny last pics when he is in boxer and he is smile.he will great actor.go dan.
i hope tabloid media dont use daniel' michael jackson comments.because im sure they write much more dan' comment.i like rock music but i love michael jackson too.because he is idol my generation like beatles, prince, queen.but im not suprise and not angry to daniel' comment.because he is free spoken and he is not apple polisher.therefor i love daniel so much
jain   |78.145.109.206 |2009-07-03 14:37:23
what was wrong with Dan's coments. Not everyone was a fan of Jackson's. When i read that he wanted to meet the Potter kids. i was thinking nooooooooooooo. But that doesn't mean i disliked the man, just his style of music and life style. My choice.
radcakesfan   |68.149.198.127 |2009-07-03 13:22:34
This was great! I wasn't going to read it because i want to buy the darn thing when it arrives over here but i couldn't resist! I love that he's getting movement lessons (the ballet) - i read that Ralph Fiennes mentioned he was still catching the odd class, which i thought was interesting. I'd always thought Dan should do something like that. It was bad timing on the Michael Jackson comment but it's honest and not surprising at all. Loved his frankness. As for the pictures, the one in his underpants was hilarious! Did anyone else think that the one where he's punching is one where he looks incredibly like a young Kyle Mclachlan? (the actor in Dune)! Wowza- great pics!
snowdog   |89.229.219.99 |2009-07-03 17:10:20
Maybe he was interviewed before Michael Jackson's death?
Shania   |85.49.194.84 |2009-07-03 21:22:35
Yes, it was before, because this interview is already printed, and there is no way they could do the interview, the photoshoot, prepare the magazine and print it in less than a week.
Anyway, I agree with all of you, so because he has died everyone has to like his music now?
I don't like how when someone famous dies, most people are very hipocritical and talk as if he was perfect, when during his life they would only criticize him.
snowdog   |89.229.219.99 |2009-07-04 02:14:45
I can't agree more. Now everybody seems to love him while during his life he was nearly always criticized.
I never liked his music and i still don't.
jain   |78.145.109.206 |2009-07-03 13:13:02
also, Dan got hit by the stuntman pretending to be a snake. This must be Godrics Hollow.
ad   |220.255.7.173 |2009-07-03 13:11:44
whats the ballet thing about? i read and reread and didn't see anything about ballet
Anonymous   |94.22.125.124 |2009-07-03 13:54:04
It's on scan number 7, the last column of the article. He is taking lessons so he, in a few years, can compete against other 21-22 year olds, who have graduated from drama school. Something Dan obviously hasn't done. If he can dance then, it might help him get a role, may be in a musical. Dan doesn't think he will have much advantage just because he has played Harry Potter for so long. So he must prepare himself by taking ballet lessons and singing lessons (he doesn't mention singing lessons in the article, but has talked about it before).

They probably interviewed Dan for this article quite some time ago. And obviously Dan had no idea that the magazine would come out a few days after Jackson's death. It was just an unlucky coincidence.
dee   |95.134.69.108 |2009-07-03 13:09:23
I love him with glasses!!!!!!!!!! SEXY COOL Handsome man!

I love how he still lives close enough to his parents to take his laundry home at the weekends.

I like Dan's haircut ;D xD

jain   |78.145.109.206 |2009-07-03 13:01:45
i thought that was a great interview, the ballet threw me at first. but a great interview . what was there not to like?
snowdog   |89.229.219.99 |2009-07-03 17:07:12
Well, I didn't like the religion stuff.
Anonymous   |94.22.125.124 |2009-07-03 12:55:51
I KNEW he was going to learn some dancing. But ballet? I'd really like to see that. And he forgot his milk on the table? I couldn't stop laughing at that. It was interesting, funny and nice to read.
jain   |78.145.109.206 |2009-07-03 12:33:20
ballet!
